The Manuscript

Wenn Güte zum Handbuch wird, fühlt sich Menschsein allmählich wie ein Regelverstoß an.

Folk-soul · satiricalSongtext von Thomas LukaschewskiOriginalsprache: Englisch

Verse 1

I bought the manual years ago, a slim and helpful guide,
“Be decent, mate,” it gently said, “and keep your ego tied.”
A page on jokes, a page on care, a paragraph on tone,
A little note: “When you mess up, just own it — then move on.”

We meant it well. We really did. We tried to do no harm,
We learned new names, we watched our words, we swallowed old alarm.
But every time I felt I’d learned, a courier would arrive—
Another “urgent” update pack: Good Person 2.5.

Pre-Chorus

And the footnotes bred like rabbits in the dark,
While I tried to keep my humanity intact.

Chorus

We’re reading, reading, reading till our eyes go dry—
Doing the right thing, but forgetting how to live and why.
A thousand rules for every room, for every breath I take,
And I’m terrified of getting good… the wrong bloody way.
So I carry it, and carry it — a rulebook for my say:
It tells me what is right to speak, but never when to disobey.

Verse 2

Morning news, another list of what a decent mind must know,
By lunch I’ve harmed three strangers with a sigh I didn’t show.
A meeting where we nod like saints, then whisper like we’re thieves,
A joke dies in my throat because the air itself perceives.

At work the group chat pings again: “Please read this thread with care,”
A kindness wrapped in hazard tape: “Be conscious. Be aware.”
In seminars we weigh our hearts with language freshly learned,
And silence counts as evidence you should be more concerned.

Pre-Chorus

We don’t debate, we regulate what’s worthy to be said—
And call the quiet “progress” once the wrong ideas are dead.

Bridge

Please sign here that you care enough, per the standardised rules,
Proof that you’ve checked your jokes for unintended “views.”
Declare your “safe” opinions, say them clearly, say them loud,
We’ll hang them round your neck so you can prove them to the crowd.

And if you ask for mercy— if you say “I tried my best,”
We’ll kindly recommend a course on why you’re still a pest.
We don’t need villains anymore; we’ve made a subtler threat:
A world where being human falls outside the safety net.

Verse 3

I’m not against compassion, I just fear what it can do,
I just miss the kind of goodness that can laugh and still be true.
I miss the room where someone’s wrong and doesn’t get erased,
Where we don’t trade in purity like it’s a social grace.

Because guilt is not a compass when it never lets you rest,
And care becomes a burden when it’s graded like a test.
Now I keep the book on my chest like a holy shield of light,
And wonder when “be better” stopped including “be alright.”

Pre-Chorus

And the strangest part of this: I support part of the goal—
It’s the way it’s enforced that’s spun out of control.

Final Chorus

We’re reading, reading, reading till our eyes go dry—
Doing the right thing, but forgetting how to live and why.
A thousand rules for every room, for every breath I take,
And I’m terrified of getting good… the wrong bloody way.
So I carry it, and carry it — a rulebook for my say:
It tells me what is right to speak…
But I’m tired. And that’s all.

Outro

And then—one night—old friends, cheap pints, the corner by the door,
We risk a slightly awful joke and live a little more.
No tribunal in the corner, no invisible review,
Just silence that forgives us, and a laugh that’s deep and true.

Outside, they add amendments to the language of the good—
But here we find an exit sign, exactly where it stood.
For once the manual can’t reach us, can’t demand, can’t overrule—
We walk each other home again… and break no bloody rule.
